2003 started with weekly hiking up Squaw Peak and biking to/ from and hiking up Camelback Mountain.
On February 16, I joined 10 other people on a hike at Seven Springs, which is northeast of Phoenix, past Cave Creek and Carefree Arizona.
On March 9th, a hike up Flatiron in the Superstition Mountains east of Phoenix.
April 5,6,7 the hike down into Havasupai Canyon in the western part of the Grand Canyon. I
The next week, I dug up the back yard to replace the sewer line, but in the process bumped the cement block wall and 40 feet of it tipped over. I hired someone to replace the knocked down portion and raise the rest of the fence, which I had wanted to do anyway.
Fly-trip for 2003:
On Thursday July 3rd, I was off the ground at 7am, climbing from Glendale to the first waypoint- the Zuni Point corridor across the Grand Canyon, then over Lake Powell, Bryce Canyon and Zion Parks into Nephi Utah on the southwest base of 11928' Mount Nebo along Interstate 15. Taking off to the north, then over Lake Utah and the Wasatch mountains east of Salt Lake City, and just west of the Grand Tetons before landing behind a Citation into a 25 knot headwind at West Yellowstone Montana at 11:20. One hour later, Richard Lindberg (who is also based at Glendale), landed, coming down from Boseman Montana in his RV-6A.
We entered Yellowstone Park in a rental car and saw the Lower Geyser Basin, Midway Geyser Basin and Old Faithful. Day two was spent with a ranger led tour through Norris Geyser Basin, hiking between and past Upper and Lower Yellowstone falls, Tower falls, and ending at Mammoth Hot Springs in the north part of the park for the night.
Day three was a hike into the Pelican Creek area north of Yellowstone Lake, then back to West Yellowstone for Buffalo Burgers.
Sunday July 6th started with a 30 minute flight over Yellowstone Park, then northwest through scattered clouds in Montana, Idaho and eastern Washington, landing at Ephrata. Climbing over Wenatchee and the Cascades gave a view of beautiful mountain lakes that only a small plane could provide, then over the water to the Olympic peninsula and Port Angeles Washington.
A hike to the top of Hurricane Hill in Olympic Park was a nice way to finish the day. The next day was spent hiking through the Hoh Rain Forest and to Sol Duc Falls and Marymere Falls.
On Wednesday, I flew south for about 30 miles into the Elwha Valley, which divides Olympic park, then a right turn to the northeast back towards the airport, past glacier covered Mount Olympus, and on to the Arlington Northwest Regional EAA fly-in.
Friends from southern California and Colorado, were there, coming from the Smiley Creek fly-in camping trip in Idaho, (see Paul Rosales trip report at: http://www.eaa49.av.org/flyouts/Smiley_Creek_2003/ )
From Phoenix, friends came in 2 planes, arriving after the daily air show. The evening and next day were spent enjoying all the Fly-in sights and sounds and the cool temperatures of the Pacific Northwest. At Arlington, you park on the grass and set your tent up right next to your plane. They have shuttles running to town and a movie each night near the RV (aircraft) parking.
Friday morning, a 7:30 am departure to Winnemucca, Nevada for fuel then on to Glendale, pulling up to the hangar at 1:50.
Later in July I installed tile on the back patio.
August 2nd,hiking to Horton Spring, east of Payson Arizona.
On August 16th I flew on Southwest Airlines to Houston to drive home a car I bought on ebay,
Hiking in Sycamore Canyon, west of Sedona on August 24th
September 20th flyin at Flabob Airport in Riverside California
October 4th, the weather was right for a hike to the top of 12,633 foot Humphreys north of Flagstaff Arizona.
October 18th flight to Las Cruces, New Mexico for the RV flyin. There were well over 200 RV's there from all over the country.
October 25th, I flew to Springerville in the White Mountains in Eastern Arizona to hike up the second tallest Arizona mountain, 11,403' Mount Baldy
